It is interesting that some of the greatest invention such as penicillin, matches and x-rays were invented by accident. Did you know that laminated glass is one of them?
In 1903, French chemist, Édouard Bénédictus, dropped a beaker by mistake, and saw it didn`t shatter into pieces. He found out that the secret was a plastic coating developed over the glass after holding cellulose nitrate. Bénédictus patented his new product, laminated glass, in 1909. Nowadays, laminated glass is made by putting two or more pieces of glass together with a sheet of plastic in the middle. This is why it is sometimes called "sandwich glass". 🥪
Here are some places you can spot laminated glass in modern society: car windshields, glass floors, skylight glazing and glass façades.
